The family house of a former Central Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Allotey Jacobs, has reportedly collapsed.

The devastating building collapse occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at Amissakyir, a fishing community in Cape Coast.

According to a report by the Ghana News Agency (GNA), the building came crashing down around 02:00 hours while the occupants were asleep.

This unfortunate incident claimed the life of a 74-year-old woman, according to the GNA report.

Other reports on social media indicate that two individuals were trapped under the rubble.

Two people were trapped under the rubble and were swiftly rescued by a joint team of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), police, and fire service personnel.

The victims, Ernestina Nduom, 74, also known as Maame Frema, and her 18-year-old grandson, Frederick, were rushed to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.

However, Ernestina was pronounced dead upon examination, while Frederick remains hospitalized and receiving treatment for his injuries.

City authorities have since initiated efforts to demolish the entire structure, which has been deemed unsafe.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, with many expressing condolences to the family of the deceased.

An investigation into the cause of the collapse is expected to follow.

Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II visits affected family

Meanwhile, the paramount chief of the Oguaa traditional council, Oguaamanhen Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II has visited the area to commiserate with the affected families.

The revered traditional ruler reportedly disclosed that efforts are underway to engage with families and owners of dilapidated buildings in Cape Coast, following the recent tragic building collapse.

He expressed his deep concern for the safety of residents living in structurally unsafe buildings.

He highlighted the urgent need for either restoration or demolition of these properties to prevent future tragedies.

Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II reassured the community that the traditional council, working with local authorities, would soon initiate discussions with property owners to take necessary action.

Grieving families shared their painful stories during the visit, with many requesting assistance in the form of shelter, food, and counseling.

Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II called for shared responsibility, urging landlords to prioritise safety over emotional attachment.

While he acknowledged the importance of preserving heritage in a historic city like Cape Coast, he stressed that safeguarding lives must take precedence.

Collapsed building kills famous photographer

Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that a building collapse, which occured during a downpour in Cape Coast on June 21, had led to the death of two elderly persons, including a famous photographer.

The deceased were identified as Obaapanyin Ataa Panyin, aged 79, and Opanyin Emmanuel Ankrah, aged 83.

The Cape Coast local government moved to demolish weak building structures to prevent future disasters.
