The reason for the arrest remains unclear, and there has been no official update from the government.
Ababio recently petitioned President John Mahama to dissolve the committee probing the Chief Justice after controversially alleging that on May 15, 2025, after the committee’s inaugural sitting, chairman of the committee Justice Pwamang, along with Supreme Court Justice Yonni Kulendi, were seen dining with Thaddeus Sory, counsel for the man pushing to have the Chief Justice removed.
He claimed they were overheard discussing matters related to the petition.
Kumi was later charged with publication of false news following his arrest.
The NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, told Citi News his party believed the arrest was linked to his petition.
“Well, certainly we think it is linked to the petition until the NIB comes out with a different reason because that is what we all know—that he has petitioned the President this week and is yet to receive an acknowledgment of it."
The General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Frimpong Kodua, condemned the arrest, calling the incident a disgrace.
Joy News reported that Kodua said he received a distress call from Kumi early Friday morning, reporting that approximately 20 armed men had surrounded his residence in Adenta, banging on his gate and demanding that he come out.
Old Tafo MP Vincent Ekow Assafuah also criticised the arrest in a post on Facebook.
“These Rambo-style actions by government continue to raise concerns that bother on free speech and good governance."
Other attempts to arrest NPP loyalists
Since the Mahama administration took office, there have been high-profile raids and arrests on people linked to the NPP and the Akufo-Addo administration.
MP for Assin South, John Ntim Fordjour, was the most recent subject of a raid on his home by National Investigations Bureau personnel.
National Security raided the residence of former Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, during a raid on Wednesday, March 19, 2025.

The attorney-general's office took responsibility for the raid with Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem-Sai claiming it was conducted lawfully.
Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta's home was also raided by a national security team. The former minister has since sued National Security over the incident.
